Make sure your DCC settings are set to SHOW GET DIALOG - Using auto-get is asking for problems. Put these commands in
IRC/Perform to make T R O U B L E S H O O T I N G If
you can receive but you can't send files CLOSE
mIRC PROGRAM AND RESTART IT DCC AND YOUR SAFETY Do yourself a BIG favor and make SURE your DCC GETS are NOT going into your main C:\MIRC folder. That is exactly how you get ini.file viruses. What you want to do to protect yourself is make sure your DCC GETS to go c:\mirc\download so they're separate from your program.ini files. Another thing to keep in mind is, don't take DCC GETS from people you don't know and trust, at least until you know the ropes well. NEVER auto-accept DCC gets. NEVER take .ini files from anyone you do not KNOW. One more thing, back up your mIRC.ini files into a zip file, so you can always restore them to the way you like them. You will be glad you did. Choose your operating system and read information
You're pretty much screwed. Your operating system is a sitting duck on IRC for anything from being knocked offline to having your hard drive formatted. Upgrade and protect yourself or re-think your decision to log onto IRC chat networks if you value your computer. At the very least, do NOT argue with anyone no matter who's right. If you can, log off your ISP and get a new IP any time you think you have pissed someone off who can wipe your system out, leave any channel where you don't feel comfortable or where you have a "bad vibe". Follow your instincts and remember, once someone has your IP number, if you don't change it by logging off your ISP and quickly getting a new number, it doesn't matter how many times you change your nick or even if you leave IRC and just surf the web for a while... once an attacker has your current dyanmic IP your computer is easily toasted. If you're running Win95 you can do something about protecting yourself from NUKE attack. Nukes are sends of data to your system that either lock it up or knock you offline. In general they don't really harm you, but they knock you offline or otherwise inconvenience you, so it's nice to have a way to avoid them. They're used on IRC by very bored people that get perverted enjoyment out of attacking others. That's about all I know about NUKES other than they're lame. If you're running an origianl version of Win95 you probably do not have the winsock updated. Update your winsock! Go get the update at microsoft, close all internet applications, run the EXE to install the new winsock and then reboot your machine. After you run a
winsock update, If you're running Win98 or better, you are all set, your winsock is already updated. Nukes are a thing of the past for you. However, thinking that IRC is safe, is fools thinking. It's not and it never will be. The lawlessness of it is all definitely at least half the fun, so remember - Use IRC at your own risk. Please Note We used to recommend a program called NukeNabber that caught your nuke attacks, and gathered data about your attacker. We no longer recommend this program as it opens up even more ports, thereby leaving you more open to attack, and you really are protected about as well as you can be with the updated winsock. Visit the official newnet web page to find a current list of newnet servers.
